Improve your quality of life with Personal Training

Happy New Year!!!

Now, it is that time of the year where you will probably be making all sorts of promises to yourself. One, two or maybe a whole host of New Year’s resolutions. You may have a specific goal, you may have signed up to a challenge or you may just want to improve your lifestyle.

Matt Jaggart has an MSc in strength and conditioning. He has been a personal trainer and strength & conditioning advisor to both MTV, the elite players of the Lawn Tennis Association, as well as designing wellbeing programmes for the employees of large corporate establishments.

Matt has a strong pedigree so we asked him to explain why people turn to Personal Trainers to help achieve their goals and why they are more likely to succeed as a result.

Matt says…..Healthy body = healthy mind!

If you are not exercising to some degree, you are probably not eating well and your quality of sleep will not be as good as it could be.  I like to call this the ‘snowball effect’. Every week, month and year that goes by these issues become harder and harder to take control of and they could expose you to a wide range of health problems. The obvious issues of weight gain and the associated health risks aside, poor health and fitness will result in lethargy which impacts daily life and effectiveness at work.

So how could a Personal Trainer help?

Essentially, a person must want to change their lifestyle and make a commitment to self to do their best! However, on cold miserable days with stress from work, it can easily be the first commitment to be dropped. A personal trainer will be your conscience and your inspiration when you are failing yourself.  When planning a commitment with my clients the first port of call, is to tackle the 3 key areas within the ‘snowball effect’ to get their lifestyle change on track and build a solid foundation to push off from. These areas are;

– Exercise

– Nutrition

– Recovery (Sleep)

To tackle these, you will need to have a sustainable and realistic plan in place which you will be able to stick to for the rest of your life. We would not be looking for a quick fix, we would be looking to install habits and behaviours that you can carry with you forever, changes that will make a real difference.

It is important to work with each client on an individual basis because, what is right for one person may not be right for the next. Everyone has different barriers and schedules and those need to be carefully considered and catered for. New born babies, children with busy schedules, work/ Life balance, business and travel, all have an impact on enthusiasm and routine but each will be easier to cope with if you are a little bit fitter.

A good Personal Trainer will analyse your lifestyle and pinpoint specific areas and make realistic suggestions that will improve your balance. When these foundations have been built you will be well on your way to achieving the goals and challenges you have outlined for the New Year.

Above all a Personal Trainer will make you accountable to yourself.

By agreeing realistic short, medium and long term goals with clients, a personal trainer can develop a routine of checks and balances that allow for your progress. Enhancements, if you feel you can cope with more, because you are getting fitter. Reductions if your routine is hampered by temporary setbacks such as illness or unavoidable commitments.  As you achieve your goals your personal trainer will encourage you to stay on track to achieve greater results. Unfortunately, too many Personal Trainers deliver session after session without setting clear goals and monitoring progression. How do they know you are moving towards your goals? How do they know what is and is not working?

Understanding your ‘why’ is important. Why do you want to achieve these goals? Why do you want to make these changes within your lifestyle?  The above methods will allow us to constantly refer to your ‘why’, they will allow us to see what is and is not working and most importantly they will keep us focused on the task in hand.
