Change of Name for Criminal Records Bureau

The childcare industry never stands still!

So, Eden Nannies & Maternity and Eden Private Staff would like to bring you right up to date regarding changes at the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB).

The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) is from now on to be known as the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). Therefore, what we previously called CRB checks are now called DBS checks.

Eden Nannies & Maternity check ALL childcare candidates’ Enhanced CRB/DBS checks and Eden Private Staff require CRB/DBS checks for candidates who will be working within households that have children. For example: Nanny Housekeepers, Housekeepers, Couples, Cooks, House Managers and so on.

Here’s how it works….

The DBS certificate

Once the check is completed, the DBS will send a certificate listing the results to both the applicant and the authorised person requesting the check.

Security features

Certificates have security features to prove they are genuine:

  • a ‘crown seal’ watermark repeated down the right hand side, visible      both on the surface and when holding it up to the light
  • a background design featuring the word ‘Disclosure’, which appears  in a wave-like pattern across both sides of the certificate; the pattern’s colour alternates between blue and green on the reverse of the certificate
  • ink and paper that change colour when wet

Certificates printed by the DBS have these security features, but ones sent by email don’t.

The security features for a CRB certificate issued before 1 December 2012 are the same as for the DBS certificate.

Reusing a DBS check…

A DBS certificate only contains information from a DBS check on a certain date and for a particular purpose. It can be accepted at a later date, but the employer will have to decide if it is recent enough or suitable for the current purpose.

It is also up to the employer to check that the applicant’s identity matches the details on the certificate.

CRB-branded certificates should be treated the same as DBS-branded certificates.

If you lose the certificate…

If you lose the certificate, or it is destroyed, a replacement cannot be provided.

All Nannies and Maternity Nurses and household staff working with or within a household with children registering with Eden will be required to have an up to date DBS check or one in progress.

Eden will help candidates set in motion a DBS check by submitting all the paperwork to a company called Civil & Corporate on their behalf. The candidate will then be required to pay for the check on-line and can follow its’ progress.
