TRADITIONAL BUTLER VERSUS MODERN HOUSE MANAGER – Meeting everybody’s needs

The skills and knowledge of a butler or house manager will vary widely depending on their individual experience and the size of the properties they have previously been responsible for. Many are used to managing multiple residences and working internationally.

The two roles can be very similar. House managers often come from a commercial or hotel management background. Whereas butlers are more traditional figures, considered to be more knowledgeable in etiquette and protocol.

In either role, where the individual is experienced they should exhibit highly professional standards.

THE BUTLER

The ‘modern’ butler’s role involves various duties. Some more traditional; such as formal table service, serving drinks, valeting and care of the wine cellar, and others, that well, help one to see how the role has changed over time.

Alongside traditional duties, today’s butlers are often employed to take on various other household responsibilities. For example, the butler may also be required to act as chauffeur, personal assistant, cook, or events organiser. From security to driving to hospitality, the butler’s role today is often interchangeable and flexible.

THE HOUSEHOLD MANAGER

The house manager role comes with ultimate responsibility and often, full accountability for the management of the entire household. Proficient in private household service and frequently the most senior role in the staff hierarchy, the house manager is responsible for the everyday running of one or more properties and will report directly to the principle.

The household manager expects to be hands-on. As a member of staff they will delegate to other staff as well as perform many tasks themselves such as training, organising and managing the duties and schedules of other staff, managing household budgets and supplies, coordinating and scheduling service contractors, ensuring home and personal security, coordinating travel arrangements and preparation for travel. They may also be involved planning and directing special events, coordinating schedules and daily activities, maintaining care of artwork, antiques and special collections, as well as, like the role of the traditional butler, serving as a personal valet to the household or gentleman of the house, and running household and personal errands.

It is worth considering that a butler or house manager can be combined with other household positions and staff roles to ultimately maintain a prestigious household in excellent condition, allowing you the time to enjoy your family.
