Online Learning Opportunities For Kids! Part 1

The potential to learn online is nothing short of incredible. There is a huge selection of fantastic online courses and learning resources online for children nowadays, teaching them everything from photography and still life drawing, to touch-typing and languages.

Online courses are an effective way to supplement your child’s learning.

An online course could encourage a child to overcome challenges in an area they are finding difficult, and on the flip side, courses are also a great way to explore talents, propelling a child into an area where they appear to excel, enabling them to explore various areas of interest that may not be accessible to them elsewhere.

Some courses are free, whilst others offer a free subscription with an option to upgrade, enabling you to unlock key features. It pays to shop around, and read reviews and keep in mind that there are some brilliant educational apps out there, with great learning potential too.

Learning Is So Easy When You Are Having Fun!

The great thing once you identify the right fit, is the chance to witness your child engaging in technology in a constructive and productive way. The fact that they are having fun in the process is of course the icing on the cake!

So, without further ado, here is a roundup of our favourite finds. You may spot the ideal course for your child in this list, but if not, our hope is that you will feel inspired to seek out some fantastic alternatives to compliment your child’s education, helping them to thrive and grow.

Learn Maths With Prodigy

This is an attractive and comprehensive site where your child can learn maths in a truly fun and engaging way. Prodigy is designed to look much like any other fun computer game, so children are immediately drawn to the interface and soon get hooked – learning maths becomes fun in an instant.

This learning resource is free of charge. There is an option to upgrade to a paid account in order to unlock some additional game content; however, this is not at all necessary and has no impact on the way a child is able to use the program as an educational tool. Click here to take a look at the Prodigy site.

Learn To Touch Type (Whilst Firing Cannons At Sharks)

I came across this great site, which is designed to teach children to touch type in a game format. The theme of the game is pirates and parrots and by tapping away at the keys you are able to unlock treasure chests, win coins and play some fun arcade style games.

There is a fixed fee for membership but you can access the first few lessons free to trial the program and try before you buy.

Many of us who did not grow up using keyboards are slow to produce documents and tap out long emails, as we were never taught how to type properly. The gift of touch typing is a great skill to pass on to a child who is sure to benefit from such a practical and valuable life skill for many years to come!

Get Creative With Jam

Creative children are sure to find one of the courses over at jam.com appealing. These practical and upbeat courses are highly engaging and cover topics including cooking, inventing, drawing and animation. The courses are designed for children between the ages of 8 and 14 and cost $99 per year for one child, (per course).

With jam.com, screen time becomes learning time and with an entire year to work through the course, the pace is relaxed. With a 7-day free trial, your child can check out the course first and see if it feels right for them, prior to making any commitment.

Muzzy is an award winning BBC language course designed for children with a choice of seven languages:

  • English
