THE EDEN INTERVIEW

Would you, could you, should you… be a House Manager?

One of the greatest aspects of writing for Eden is finding out about how some of the private staff we have placed are getting on. Here we speak to Mark Doyle about his role as House Manager. We began by asking…

How did you end up in this particular line of work?

I had actually been working for five star hotels around the world and I’d gained so much experience that I was ready for a change of scene.

Did you always want to work as a House Manager?

Goodness no. For years I never even knew the role existed. I only happened to hear about it when I was looking for a change and got talking to someone about heading in a new direction. The idea of House Manager instantly appealed though as I realised I could bring a considerable amount from my past hotel work with me, and offer an exceedingly high level of service, at the same time, finally feel grounded back home.

Has your career been enjoyable to date?

So far yes, it’s been brilliant. It’s rewarding in other ways to my past hotel experience. Busy in other ways.

Did you acquire any particular training for this profession?

Personally, no, not as such, but years of hotel experience have led to a great resumé with very good references. Attention to detail and attention to protocol is essential. Training staff is important and I’ve had years of experience in that. Knowing how to budget, to keep books and oversee household inventories and supply control is also required, and I’ve always done that too.

What attributes do you have?

Well I’m great at delegating! And I can literally turn my hand to anything. I know a lot about all sorts of stuff that goes into running a large residence smoothly. My can do attitude taken me far, along with a sense of humour.

What does your job involve?

From flower arranging to writing calligraphy to my thorough knowledge of fine wines, I’m called on for all sorts of extras that stretch beyond my CV.

Best bit about your role?

From private health insurance to driving a Porsche, I get a kick out of all the perks that come with the role.

Do you have any working relationship tips/advice for up and coming House Managers?

It is important to be yourself in any job, but if you stay true to that motto, you will earn respect from the staff you manage. A harmonious house is a happy one.

Has the role opened any doors for you?

I’d always travelled working in hotels abroad, so to be in one place here in the UK for so long has actually been a welcome change. I would say that it’s actually doors of contentment that have opened now – I’m much more settled.

How do you relax? Spend your time off.

Apart from learning Mandarin and horse riding, I like to get away. My hands on work attitude means that when I’m there, I’m always tuned into work so I find it is important to get my down time away from the house. Recently I took myself off to a pottery retreat and ended up staying there the entire week I was off. I think it’s important to spend your time treating yourself.
