THE EDEN INTERVIEW

Would you, could you, should you… be a Close Protection Officer?

One of the greatest aspects of writing for Eden is finding out about how some of the private staff we have placed are getting on. Here we speak to Matt Ford about his role as a bodyguard. We began by asking…

How did you end up in this particular line of work?

I joined the army straight from school and when I got out, became a security guard for a small business. It was the closest thing to James Bond at the time! It led from there.

Did you always want to work as a Bodyguard?

Yes! It’s so cliché but I was inspired by 007!

Has your career been enjoyable to date?

It’s not been without its challenges. I’ve worked protecting some very important people. I mean; it’s been my job to keep them safe. That’s responsibility. And I love it – so yes, very enjoyable.

Did you acquire any particular training for this profession?

I took close protection training after coming out the military. But serving in the army was my real training for the job.

What attributes do you have?

I can think on my toes and am quick-witted. I’m physically fit and I’m trained in Jiu Jitsu. I’m tech savvy and can handle a Firearm. And I’m incredibly confident.

What does your job involve?

Really it’s all about trust. Alongside that, it’s about being professional at all times. Being okay with being in the public eye. Being able to commit fully to the role. Having great communication skills and common sense. Presenting well at all times.

Best bit about your role?

Being able to look after my client and keep them safe. Seeing them at ease because I’m fulfilling my duty.

Do you have any tips/advice for up and coming CPOs?

You can’t do anything legit until you are licensed. The SIA (Security Industry Authority) can offer training and licensing for all manner of CPO jobs. Of course they can’t offer you a good eye and situational awareness. You either have that or you don’t.

Has the role opened any doors for you?

Being a bodyguard has opened doors for me in as much as I do a job I love. Plus I’ve got to see the world.

How do you relax? Spend your time off.

It’s an exhilarating profession and one where you often spend time in the public eye. Therefore it’s vital to rest and relax during time off so that when you are on (duty) you are ready to think and react quickly. For real down time I visit family if and when I’m in the country.
