BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
1st – 31st OCTOBER 2025
We want to help raise awareness for such an important month of campaigning for ‘Breast Cancer Now’, the breast cancer charity in the UK.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a vitally important event that takes place every year and strives to continue the work of educating women and the general public about breast cancer. This includes promoting early detection of the disease and also how to continue raising funds for important research.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. And approximately 56,000 new cases are diagnosed in women every year
This campaign also serves as a reminder that, although very rare, men can also get breast cancer. Current statistics provide that in the UK approximately 400 men are diagnosed with breast cancer a year and in the USA, The American Cancer Society projects that around 2,800 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2025.
Men are therefore encouraged to be aware of the symptoms, as often diagnosis is delayed which leads to poorer outcomes. Being vigilant and reporting any changes to the GP regarding breast tissue, such as a lump, nipple changes or discharge could be life changing.
Breast Cancer Awareness month plays a crucial role in fostering essential community support for survivors, as well as those currently undergoing cancer treatments.
In more detail, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a global campaign that takes place every October to highlight and educate people on a number of topics such as: what are the signs and symptoms of breast cancer?; how do you detect the disease early through self-examination? and why it is so important to attend the routine screening appointments that are available to you. The campaign also highlights what treatments options are available and what we all can do to help raise funds for research.
The campaign is also integral in providing support to those affected by breast cancer which includes survivors, patients and their families.
Getting Involved
Throughout October organisations work to spread the message about the importance of regular check-ups and preventative care. This can be done through a variety of fundraising activities. For example:
- Participating in a Walk or Run: join up with a local or a virtual breast cancer awareness walk/run and contribute to raising funds for research
- Wearing Pink (see more details below): the pink ribbon, now an international symbol for breast cancer awareness, was introduced in 1992. It is a simple and fun way to show support so wear your pink with style!
- Donating: directly contribute to organisations that fund breast cancer research, provide support services and other awareness campaigns
- Sharing Your Personal Story: you could use social media and other platforms to share your story – this is a very powerful tool as it helps provide key information and can signpost people to resources and it generally helps raise awareness
- Scheduling a Screening: actively in encourage the people around you to schedule a mammogram – it could save a life
History of the Event
Breast Cancer Awareness Month was originally initiated in 1985, founded by the American Cancer Society and pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca.
Since then, the month of October has become synonymous with widespread efforts to raise awareness, support those affected by breast cancer and fund life-saving research.
