Our Favourite New Years Resolutions

It’s that time again, the one where we all swear that we are going to make significant changes in our lives! With a New Year upon us many of us will be making a vow that 2018 will be the year we became the person we always wanted to be, even though many of us will have failed to stick to it by the second week.

If you are really serious about making changes why not try to make ones which are interesting and fun or will help to make someone else happy.

Here are just a few suggestions:

  1. Getting Fit

I’ve heard this particular one an awful lot. Maybe that’s because we all seem to overindulge over the festive season and end December feeling bloated and sluggish. It’s a great idea to get fitter but promising to spend two hours every day in the gym is never going to last. Instead, why not choose to do an activity that could be fun as well as increasing fitness. My favourite would be taking dance lessons or learning to ice skate. Tap your brain cells and find a fun activity.

  1. Healthy Eating

Busy lifestyles can play havoc on our eating regime and often snacking or fast food feels like the only option at the end of a long working day with the result that we increasingly feel under par because we lack essential nutrients. Rather than joining that endless cycle of dieting and binging why not sign up for a cookery course and learn to cook healthy and nutritious meals. Choose a course which encompasses your favourite foods. Once you are proficient you can make everyone else happy by creating healthy and nutritious meals and snacks.

  1. Cut down on drinking alcohol

This can be a tricky habit to break because even our working lives seem to revolve around business lunches or post-conference drinks meetings these days but continual drinking can be bad for our health and make us more sluggish. The secret is to substitute your favourite tipple with an alcohol-free version. Non alcoholic beer and wines are much better than they used to be but if that doesn’t float your boat why not try Mocktails because they can taste great without any alcohol at all and they really don’t have to be girly. Why not learn how to make them yourself and impress your friends and colleagues with your knowledge and skill.

  1. Become more sociable

When we are busy it’s very easy to use excuses to avoid socialising, with our families or friends. Yet having close relationships and people to relax with is vital for our mental wellbeing. Don’t turn down invitations, instigate them and dream up some fun activities to help you to reconnect with loved ones.

  1. Change your life

If you are stuck in a rut you’ll never manage to drag yourself out without being brave. If you have always wanted to travel or turn your hobby into your job, grasp the metal and go for it. You only get one chance at living so now is the time to embrace your ambitions and desires.

  1. Spend less time on social media

Social media has become a serious addiction. Although it’s fine to stay in touch with distant friends and family, consistently spending hours every evening scrolling through endless sites is not as much fun as actually meeting up with those people and doing something together.

  1. Minimalize your life

If you have a habit of keeping hold of things just because you can’t bear to throw them away, now is the time to make a change. Get rid of the rubbish but if you have useful things that you don’t use why not donate them to someone who might need them. You will make someone else happy whilst giving yourself a little internal boost.

  1. Be more loving and considerate

Maybe you consider yourself to already be pretty good on both counts with your family and friends but there are lots of ways to improve because no one person is always thoughtful or kind. Ring your mum/dad/gran and have a short chat or thank the member of staff who saved you a phone call or email. Small gestures can mean a great deal to the recipient and you will benefit by knowing you made someone else feel happy or appreciated.

  1. Learn a new skill

This can be anything from learning how to juggle or spending your evening teaching yourself to paint watercolours or knit. It really isn’t important how skilful you become. As long as you enjoy your endeavours and it helps you to relax that is all that matters.

  1. Give yourself a break

Most of us are just too hard on ourselves; we want to be slimmer, fitter, cleverer, wealthier or some other stress-inducing obsession. Why not aspire to being calmer, kinder, happier and less self-critical in 2018.

Whilst resolutions can be fun they can also be inspiring and thought-provoking. It’s your choice which direction you head in but if you find yourself slipping just take a moment to remember that every small step is leading you to where you want to be.
