Why Gardening Organically Makes Sense

People choose to garden organically for a variety of different reasons. Some choose to reject the use of chemicals due to the environmental damage they cause, whilst for others, the primary concern is to protect their own and their loved ones health.

It is a common misconception that organic gardening is a costly option, when in fact this is far from the truth. Experienced organic gardeners learn how to work alongside natural systems to get the most out of their gardens with no expenditure on chemicals.

The three points below explore a few of the reasons why making the switch to organic gardening makes so much sense.

Organic Gardening Is Better For The Environment

If you consider your garden as part of a wider ecosystem, rather than a separate entity, it is easy to see why it is so important to consider the impact that our gardens have on the ecology of the area you live in.

Chemical pesticides and fertilisers that are sprayed in gardens, gradually find their way into our waterways causing harm to aquatic life.

Pesticides are detrimental to all kinds of beautiful and beneficial insects including bees and butterflies, so gardeners who wish to encourage all kinds of wildlife into their gardens should avoid the use of chemicals altogether.

Chemical Pesticides Pose Serious Health Risks

Exposure to agricultural chemicals has been linked to a broad spectrum of health issues. Many of the conventional pesticides are carcinogenic and have been linked to several types of cancer in both adults and children. Exposure to other pesticides and herbicides has been linked to:

  • Kidney and liver damage
  • Birth defects & miscarriage
  • Increased risk of asthma in children
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Neurological disorders

This is not an exhaustive list; these chemicals can contribute to many other health problems, so it is easy to appreciate the benefits of avoiding them altogether!

On top of all of the serious health risks listed above, there are always risks associated with storing, handling and mixing dangerous chemicals, particularly when there are children and pets around.

Switching to organic gardening immediately eliminates these kinds of risks from your home environment.

Organic Gardening Is Cost Effective

Spraying weed killer on your paths, courtyards and gravelled areas may seem like the fastest and easiest option, but would it really take that much more time to pour boiling water on your weeds to kill them off instead?

Aside from boiling water there are many other environmentally friendly options you could choose to help you maintain control and give those pesky weeds a hard time!

Weed suppressant fabric, mulching and suffocating weeds by placing rocks or wood over them can work effectively in certain areas and there are also lots of methods that use vinegar and salt to kill weeds with excellent results. All of these methods are far more cost effective than being dependent on chemicals to maintain control of your garden.

Try It…

Using organic methods is the best option for the environment and enables you to create a healthy, natural outside space, to be enjoyed by you and your family without harming anything that grows or lives within it.
