How The Private Staff Recruitment Sector Has Grown in The Last 20 Years

There is plenty of evidence that the private staff recruitment sector has experienced significant levels of growth in the last 20 years (you only have to look at the rise in the number of private staff recruitment companies as an indication) and the sector shows no sign of stopping. As the private staff recruitment sector has evolved and expanded, we are able to track and attribute its’ significant growth to a number of key factors:

There is little doubt that we are all much, much busier: families, businesses, friends, health, hobbies/activities, travel all compete for time and life moves at a much faster pace. Consequently, because there is so much demand on our work/life balance, there has been an overall incremental rise in the demand for private staff in our homes, properties and business. Undoubtedly, busy people need more help than before and assistance is sought in areas of both personal and professional lives with a wide range of staff including Maternity Nurses, Nannies, Governesses/Tutors, Personal Assistants, Housekeepers, House Managers, Butlers, Couples, Chauffeurs, Chefs/Cooks, Gardeners, Estate Managers, Security. The steep rise in demand and the employment of this type of staff has of course pushed the boundaries of growth of the private staff recruitment sector and also led to the rise of the number of companies offering staffing solutions in the sector.

Another very relevant factor that has contributed to growth in the sector, is the meteoric rise of social media and a myriad of online platforms. These have led to a sizeable increase in the visibility and accessibility of private staff recruitment companies and have had a huge impact on the industry. The growth in this area can also be seen as two-fold: Candidates who are looking for private staff roles and Employers seeking to hire staff. Both sides have been able to connect more easily through a variety of online platforms and have improved accessibility to the recruitment companies who can keep their profiles high on these platforms, resulting in a higher demand for private staffing recruitment services.

Globalisation and increased individual/family wealth is another factor contributing to the growth of the private staff recruitment sector. As the world has become more interconnected and travel so much easier, individuals and families increasingly seek private staff to cater to all their needs at different locations around the world. This could be for example the requirement to hire a number of staff in different countries across a portfolio of properties owned by a family or it could be the requirement to employ staff to travel with an individual/family in order to maintain consistency and continuity – for example a Maternity Nurse, Nanny, Governess/Tutor, PA, Chef. These trends have led to increasing demand for private staff recruitment companies to find staffing solutions and find the best qualified and most experienced and suitable candidates for these roles.

The sector has also seen significant growth in the use of private staff recruitment companies to search and place staff in private ‘Family Offices’. Family Offices employ a wide range of people to manage the businesses & financial needs of a wealthy family/families. These roles can include for example PA’s, Office Managers, Chefs, Chauffeurs, House Managers, Estate Managers, Domestic Couples.

Increasingly, the private staff recruitment sector has seen growth through the desire for Clients to focus on a better work-life balance as well as the desire for personalised and customised services. Many individuals and families are looking for professional staff who can provide personalised care (such as a Chef/Cook for specialised dietary requirements) and assistance tailored to their specific preferences and needs. Each role is unique and the private staff recruitment companies play a crucial role in matching candidates with clients, ensuring that the services provided are aligned with the client’s expectations.

Where The Growth & Demand for Private Staff is Highest

It is also useful to consider where the sector has grown the most over the years as this varies across countries and is largely dependent on factors such as cultural norms, economic growth and the affluence in specific regions.

An example of an area of growth and where demand typically remains high is the UK, and in particular London, as there is a high percentage of wealth located in the city. Historically the UK is known for the employment of private household staff with roles such as Nannies, Butlers, Cooks, Housekeepers, Tutors & PA’s being high on the list in affluent households.

Demand also remains strong and has been an area of continuous growth in the Middle East, in countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. These countries use private staff recruitment companies to find domestic staff, Nannies, Tutors, Chauffeurs and PA’s to cater to their needs.

The United States is another country known for having a significant demand for private household staff, particularly in major cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Miami. American families often employ Nannies, Housekeepers, Chefs, Chauffeurs, PA’s, House Managers, Estate Managers and a whole array of staff for a private ‘Family Office’ to assist with managing their homes, businesses and caring for their children.

Other countries that are popular for their ‘luxury living’ lifestyle tag such as France, Switzerland and Monaco, and where there is a high density of wealthy individuals, have also seen incremental growth and demand for private staff.

To conclude, the private staff recruitment sector’s significant growth in the last 20 years is due to a number of influential factors and this trend seems likely to continue as people seek more and more help and assistance with managing both their personal and professional lives.
