KEEPING AN EYE

Last week, Eden questioned the Nanny Cam trend in our feature post Trusting your domestic childcare choice, asking at what point do cameras become intrusive. We decided that when not concealed, they are a welcome addition to household security. We also recently posted Threats to residential properties advising on security and how best to protect your home. We hope that between these two posts, we’ve managed to weigh up both positive and negative home security aspects.

When it comes to the home, security systems are becoming increasingly sophisticated and more affordable too. These days you can purchase equipment that is compatible with your Smartphone, allowing you to keep an eye on the things you care about from anywhere in the world. And let’s face it; if you’re heading off on a breakaway, the biggest concern is that your house and its valuables remain safe.

One such system that is accessible via a smart phone app is the Nest cam. Streaming 24/7 live video securely to your phone (or tablet or laptop) in super clear 1080p HD, it also has a built-in microphone and speaker allowing users to hear what is going on as well as communicate back to any loved ones, pets or intruders through the camera itself.

You can’t always be watching your video feed, especially whilst on holiday so the idea is that the Nest Cam looks for motion and listens for sound. If something’s up, it sends an alert to your phone, and when someone is about to speak, Nest Cam will chime to get your attention.

Nest Cam’s design means it can be securely placed in many locations. Its stand allows you to have it on both walls and magnetic surfaces – or to use a 3rd-party mount. It can be adjusted to capture the view wanted, for the stand incorporates a rare-earth magnet and ¼ inch, 20-screw mount, providing all three degrees of freedom, allowing a 130º wide-angle view of the room or to zoom in and enhance for a closer look.

When it comes to night vision, eight infrared LEDs help you see the entire room at night. Nest Cam knows the difference between a flashlight and a lit room, so if an unexpected intruder enters with a torch, Night Vision won’t turn off so you can capture it on camera.

Home Security Systems are just one way of bringing security to your home and family. And homeowner will be aware of the concerns and effects of a burglary. The violation of one’s personal space and safe haven can have a lasting impact on a family. Should you require more information, Eden offers advice on all such matters within the new security services and staffing team. Should you wish to discuss any security concerns without obligation, please email Rick Mounfield MSc FSyI, our Head of security. Rick @edenprivatestaff.com
