Advice for Nanny & Maternity Nurses

If you have decided to become a maternity nurse you will need to know what to expect from the job. You should be willing to work hard and accept that sleepless nights can be frequent when on a booking. You need to be confident in your knowledge of new-borns, their care, breastfeeding, minor ailments and spotting the signs of any major ones.

For any inexperienced nanny or maternity nurse, or for anyone who is completely new to the field, a good place to start and gain confidence is by taking an OCN (Open College Network) course, particularly the OCN Maternity Practitioner’s Award, or the Post Natal Care/Maternity Nursing course which is run by N.E.S.T (Newborn Education Services & Training).

These are just a few of the many great courses that will arm you with the knowledge and theory to get you started in your role as a maternity nurse or baby nurse. They are also a great way to understand the guidelines surrounding Cot Death, and make a really good start to any career as a maternity nurse.

Being a maternity nurse is a fun and rewarding job; helping parents to become confident, loving and positive towards their babies. This benefits the baby as those who have a positive environment can become confident, loving and caring adults.
