Spring Cleaning – Those once a year (big) jobs!

It may feel as though winter is going on forever, but with the days getting a little longer already we can definitely start to look forward to Spring!  This is often the time when we feel the need to ‘clean up’ and ‘clear out’ the cobwebs – both literally and figuratively!

So, how about a few tips and reminders of some of those necessary jobs that can be tackled at this time of year – shake out the rug and let’s get on with it!

CHIMNEYS

Depending how much you use your fireplace the National Fire Protection Association says: “Chimneys, fireplaces and vents should be inspected at least once a year for soundness and freedom from deposits and blockages. They also recommend you do the cleaning, maintenance and repairs at the same time. For help in finding a local sweep have a look at the website: nacs.org.uk

INTERIOR PAINTWORK

If you do want to wash a wall/walls then use warm water and a nonabrasive all-purpose cleaner. Dip a clean sponge in the water, wring it dry and gently rub the wall paying particular attention to those areas that get used/touched continually such as around the doorknob/handles and light switches.

CURTAINS

A big job but well worth it! Take the curtains down and remove all the eye hooks and weights and loosen the heading tape. Check the care instructions and either send them off to be dry cleaned or cool machine wash them.

UPHOLSTERED FURNITURE & CARPETS

Your carpets and special upholstered furniture should deep cleaned by a professional company. You can find help choosing one by looking at the National Carpet Cleaners Association.

LIGHT BULBS

Make sure the lights are switched off and have cooled down before you start cleaning. Simply wipe each bulb with a damp cloth.

SHOWERHEADS

Top tip! Unscrew and leave overnight in a bowl of distilled vinegar.

KETTLES

Fill the kettle with half water and half distilled vinegar and leave overnight in order to remove any build-up of limescale.

MATTRESSES

Whilst most modern mattresses do not need to be turned, you could still give them a hoover!

CLOGGED UP BASINS & BATHS

There are many remedies for unblocking drains and you may have your own preferred method! If not, give this one a go: pour boiling water down the drain, followed by ½ a cup of bicarbonate of soda. Leave for a few minutes then pour in a cup of distilled vinegar and another of boiling water. Leave for 30 minutes, then flush through with more boiling water.

Good luck with the ‘big clean’ and if you are looking for a Housekeeper/House Manager or Handy Person for your household to undertake these kind of tasks, then the Eden Team would be pleased to advise & help you with your search. +44 (0)207 471 6000
