Staying Focused On Work

Beating distractions and lethargy, combined with a million other things, can make focusing on work a superhuman effort. With the endless stream of notifications on our phones and the tempting Netflix show you can’t stop watching, staying productive and on-task is harder than ever. Still, there is hope for our distracted and chaotic minds: with a few simple alterations to the daily routine and how you approach working, staying focused is perhaps not as difficult as your brain may tell you it is!

  1. An organised workspace:

If you are naturally tidy and organised, you are already halfway there. But if you are like most people, who work amongst mountains of untidy papers and files, then now is the time to change that. The nature of your workspace often reflects the type of headspace you may be in, so an organized and well-arranged desk will get your brain thinking along the same lines. In this instance, order is better than chaos!

  1. Zero tolerance for procrastination:

The problem with procrastination is, where does it end!? The real answer is that it doesn’t. Getting into this habit of saying ‘I’ll do it tomorrow’ or just putting general tasks off until you feel like it is a dangerous trap, because chances are you will never feel like it. In order to stay focused on work, ban any procrastination thoughts from your brain and start time-blocking your assignments. The less tasks hanging over you, the happier you will be and the workload will feel far less of a burden.

  1. Plan Plan Plan:

The most important part to staying focused is having a clear plan which you know you have to stick to. Chose a work journal and plan your day in chunks (the time length is up to you), scheduling your work in these slots, until all the tasks for the day are mapped out. Instead of floating around from one piece of work to the next, having a plan will give your day structure with clear aims. By the end of the day, you should feel much more accomplished and productive – the higher priority tasks will have been completed and you can relax!

  1. Lock up distractions:

The main culprits for unfocused work sessions are all things technological. Notifications are designed to grab our attention and pull us away from what we are doing, so put phones, tablets, or smart watches away in a drawer until the end of your work session. Focus requires a calm and undisturbed environment. You can listen to classical music or ‘study beats’, but constant checking your phone etc will drain energy and waste valuable productive time.

  1. Short breaks

After each longer period of work, renew your energy and attention span by taking a short 10 minute break after finishing a bigger task. No, do not use this time to scroll through Instagram, but instead grab a snack and stay away from screens. The nature of modern-day work is that we are constantly fixated on brightly lit tech, so keep headaches and tiredness away through a short interval of doing something completely different. Your focus will renew as you sit down to start again and once you get into the flow, should even begin to last longer.

If you want to train your brain into focusing better, the more you try, the stronger your skills will become.

Getting into the zone will gradually become easier and easier, just give these tips a go and see how you get on.

Good luck!
