What duties will a Private or Corporate Chauffeur undertake within a role?

Generally a chauffeur’s job is to drive and maintain cars including valet of vehicles, organise MOT’s and services. Working flexibly and at times on a split shift or fleaxible days/ hours they will coordinate with the principals, PA/ EA or House Manager to ensure they are able to anticipate needs for pickups/ drop off, airport runs and ensure daily appointments are managed effectively. A corporate chauffeur may spend time on basic office duties and act as the company’s courier. Increasingly, chauffeurs are being sought that also have extra abilities including booking appointments, travel, restaurants, entertainment, shopping, running errands and other flexible duties are required.

In a private household chauffeur or a hybrid private / corporate chauffeur position they may have additional duties such as: driving children to and from school, carrying out minor household repairs, basic garden and household maintenance and care of pets. Many chauffeurs may be engaged to take care of the personal security of their employer and his/her family alongside driving. Most professional chauffeurs have extensive experience of caring for prestige/ luxury and vintage cars. They are also responsible for keeping their employers’ cars in good condition (washing, waxing and polishing), carrying out basic car maintenance (checking tyre pressures, oil and water levels).

What are the advantages of having a Private or Corporate Chauffeur?

A private or corporate chauffer can offer a high degree of flexibility in what they undertaken and become a valued member of the team. With a good knowledge of London/ UK roads and most major airport routes they can work flexibility to ensure the needs of an employer are met. This can include early morning and late evening pick up’s /drops offs, travel with an employer as required within the UK or abroad and work flexibly undertaking a wide range of other duties.

Often combining security, houseman or PA duties they can be a good option for employers requiring commitment, reliability and continuity from an employee that can work closely with them to meet their personal and professional needs. Benefiting from having someone that can help generally with PA duties/ school runs, caring for pets, running errands, maintenance and DIY employing a chauffeur can save time and money on having to get in additional trades people for basic daily household needs. Professional chauffeurs are generally smart, well-presented candidates who are discreet, take a pride in their jobs and the cars they drive. They may have advanced driving, chauffeur training, defensive driving and anti-hijack certificates.

What will having a Private or Corporate Chauffeur cost and any additional information?

Generally chauffeurs will work 5, 5.5 or 6 days a week. Hours are generally between 40-50 per week but this may vary depending on the needs of an employer’s schedule and if they are required to do a split shift day for example: early morning airport drop off and then a late evening pick up.

Whilst some chauffer may be live in with accommodation provided the majority are employed on a live out daily basis. In many instances the chauffer will have a car stay with them to ensure they are reliable with early pickups and late evening drop offs.  Chauffeurs’ wages vary considerably and depend, on the number of hours they work and the flexibility the employer demands. Allowing the chauffeur to keep a car with them or having them live in with accommodation provided will also be taken into consideration.

Some chauffeurs accept a fixed wage including an estimated amount of overtime; thereby taking the risk they will not be asked to work excessive overtime hours. Others receive a basic wage for a standard working week and are paid overtime pay (usually 50% greater than their standard hourly rate) for the extra hours they work. As a very general guide a live our chauffer may earn in London on skills/ experience and the requirement of the role between £30 – £50k gross per year. If under PAYE they will be entitled to paid annual leave (generally arranged around the employer’s schedule) and SSP.
