Walk All Over Cancer 1st – 31st March 2023

Get fit AND raise money for Cancer Research UK at the same time!

Throughout the whole of March, we can all embrace this challenge, which offers us the opportunity to get fitter and do a huge amount towards raising vital funds for cancer research and prevention.

The Walk All Over Cancer challenge takes place annually every March in the UK. Participants are asked to undertake their own personal ‘sponsored walk’ of 10,000 steps every day for the whole month with all proceeds raised donated to the charity.

You can do the walks on your own by incorporating the 10,000 steps into your daily routine or perhaps you could do the daily challenge with a friend/group of friends or family. There are also local walking groups that you could join if you find that more motivating! All participants are encouraged to share their progress using the hashtag #walkallovercancer.

Most of us are already aware of the massive benefits we can reap from regular walking and this challenge will help you achieve the recommended daily amount of 10,000 steps for optimum health. And take note of this fabulous fact: 10,000 steps per day for a month results in walking a total of 150 miles!!

You can also be proud of yourself with the knowledge that your ‘Stepping’ will contribute to research into cancer treatment and prevention throughout the world and allow for the development of new cancer drugs.

So, if you feel up for this challenge during March then here are a few ideas for how you can increase your daily step count:

  • Take the dog for an extra walk! (won’t they be happy!)
  • Do a fitness class/video at home or at the gym
  • Plan to get off the train or bus a stop or two earlier than your usual one
  • Explore and find new places to walk in your local area
  • Commit to always taking the stairs!
  • Walk and talk when you are on the phone/mobile instead of slumping in a chair!

And lastly, if you were in any doubt as to how good walking is for you, here are some good reasons and reminders of the benefits:

  • Walking will improve your fitness

Regular walking can help you maintain a healthy weight, burn calories and help tone muscle

  • Walking is good for your mental health

Walking offers you a good way to zone-out and rid yourself of the daily stresses of life. Plus, exercise-induced endorphins will leave you feeling a whole lot better than when you started!

  • Walking can help lower your blood pressure

Being active each day can help lower your blood pressure and in turn will help reduce your risk of heart problems in the future

So what are you waiting for? Good luck & happy ‘Stepping!’
